Vision Sunday (3rd July) and letter from the elders

On the 3rd July at City Hope's 'Meet and Eat' Sunday the elders outlined a vision to see City Hope move to three Sunday sites, in Bermondsey, Rotherhithe and the ‘South’ by January 2018. Following on from the Sunday a letter was sent to church members covering the main points of that vision by way of a reminder. The text from that letter is given below.

Why go to sites?
We want to build a big church but keep the intimacy and sense of community in church life that sites will allow us.

Being ‘local’ has always been a big part of City Hope’s DNA. Going to three sites will help us to reach the localities where we live in a more bespoke way and to reflect the diversity found in our different local areas of London.

We have been developing our local outreach in the past few years through our Connect communities and groups. Going to sites means we can also bring our Sunday gatherings into this vision. It will provide more opportunities for people to realise the potential of their God given gifts which can be more difficult in a large church.

How do we prepare?
On the 3rd July we highlighted a few specific areas of church life that we want to develop to help us get ready for sites, including: looking for new elders to join the team; recruiting a part-time youth worker to strengthen our youth work; holding a monthly Sunday evening worship event; and developing a number of training programmes to allow us to grow in our maturity and gifts.

Also we will run five ‘local Sundays’ like the 19th June. These will help build the church community in our localities. The next planned ‘local Sunday’ is the 16th October followed by our carol services in mid-December.

We’ll be looking to develop local flavour and vision for each site as we get ready for the launch. Chris Nicholson is leading Rotherhithe, Paul Brown leading Bermondsey and Vic Wilson leading City Hope ‘South’ which includes the Deptford, New Cross, Peckham and Camberwell localities.

Going to three sites could be just the start for us. We have a big vision for London and the ‘villages’ that make it up. However, we do want to take time to do this well, which is why our goal is to launch in January 2018, still 18 months away.

We want to be one church meeting in different sites. We want to catch God’s heart for our different localities and see his love transforming them, believing God for an impact across London and the world.

As you have read this you may be excited or perhaps unsettled. You may have questions or concerns. Please feel free to talk to any of the elders face to face, on the phone or by e mail. We desire to be a church moving together in love and unity; so let us know what you think. We are aware that this is a lot to take on board but we are excited about what God has for City Hope as we look to step out in faith with boldness to see our local communities impacted by the love of Jesus.

With our love

Vic, Paul, Dave & John.
